QA Software Tester CV Example: How to Build a Job Seeking Resume

“Do you have a sample Software Testing resume that I can use?” is a frequently asked question, especially by newbies to IT.

True, we all learn by observing. To commence, we have to develop a reference point, so it’s not a bad idea to look over someone else’s resume. However, focusing entirely on it and attempting to customize it to candidate requirements might not be the best way to generate results.

1. What Exactly is a Resume for a Software Tester?

A resume for a software tester is a professional document that is usually one or two pages in length. It outlines all of the abilities and expertise that software testers must-have. If you’re starting out as a junior or senior software tester, this document should reflect that. You should highlight the abilities required and understanding of software testing procedures based on the experience.

2. Tips on How to Write a Resume for Software Testing

We all come from diverse educational backgrounds, have different work experiences, and have varying skill levels. Your resume should include a summary of everything that makes you distinct. As a result, your CV is the most crucial document that demonstrates your software testing expertise.

The following are the steps to writing a resume:

1) Make a list of all of your abilities, qualifications, work experience, systems, techniques, upcoming projects, and so on.

The following is an example of a list:

Educational Qualifications

  • ‘A’ Level- (year to be mentioned when completed) 10th Standard- 2012
  • ‘B’ Level- (year to be mentioned when completed)12th Standard- 2014
  • Bachelors (year to be mentioned when completed or ongoing)

You must provide all of your educational degrees in this section.

Work Experience

  • 2017–2019: Company X — Software Test Engineer
  • 2019- Present: Company Y — Software Quality Analyst

This is a list of all of your employment experiences. Include the number of years you’ve worked, as well as the name of the company and the role you had.

2) Take a look at the technical skills area and try to organize them according to your level of expertise. On my skills, I usually utilize the rating approach. Try to provide a rating to your list on a scale of 1–5, with 5 being the expert and 1 being simply familiar.

3) After that, begin researching various job descriptions and incorporating keywords into your CV.

It is evident from the following list that candidate lacks the necessary skills to apply for a QTP post. That’s OK. We must always be aware of our weaknesses in order to improve our strengths. Our approach helps us in this attempt. At this point, you have two choices:

  • If QTP is not your cup of tea, just move on to a Manual Testing position that better suits your skills.
  • However, if you choose to pursue Automation Testing, I could dedicate a few days to learning the ability. I may contemplate pursuing a QTP profession after I reach a rating level of 3–5.

After you’ve finished listing, rating, and self-evaluating, the next step is to create a template.

3. Resume Template for Software Testing

Here are some elements you should include in your template.

3.1. The Header

This area contains some basic contact information, such as your name, address, email address, and phone number. You should also include a link to your professional network profile, as well as all of your testing certificates and other credentials.

3.2. Objective

You must explain why you want this job or why you want to change job in this area. You might also say if you’ve worked in one branch of IT before and want to move on to another.

3.3. Overview of Professional Experience

You must include your abilities, strengths, responsibilities performed by technologies you are familiar with, successes & awards, and certificates in this section. You should begin by highlighting the points that need to be highlighted.

3.4. Certifications

Include this section if you have multiple certifications. Note: I’ve seen some newcomers include — “preparing for ISTQB” or something similar in this section. In most cases, this is incorrect. Include only those for which you have already received certification. Use a table for multiple certifications.

3.5. Work Experience

Make a list of everything you’ve done so far on your sticky note list. The table format is ideal for your resume in this case. You should preserve your most recent experience in the first row when ordering the columns in the table.

3.6. Technical Skills

Specify a list of your technical skills required for on-the-job and off-the-job tasks, organized by category.

3.7. Educational Qualifications

In the tabular format, including all of your schooling. As the first row, begin with your highest education. Mention all key information, such as graduation/10+2 years bachelors/masters/A level, B level years of completion, institution/city attended, and so on. Your percentages can also be included.

3.8. Projects

The last but most crucial element of your CV is the projects. In this area, you must provide particular information on the type of software tester job you have performed in past jobs up to this point. If you worked on several projects, your report should begin with the most recent one and work its way to the next.

  • Well-versed in Agile, Scrum, and waterfall methodologies.
  • A total of 100 hours of professional software testing training should be completed by the individual.
  • Excellent knowledge of the STLC and review process, as well as test case documentation.
  • Getting to know QTP and JIRA for automation testing.
  • During the system testing or UAT phases, I was involved in testing.
  • Bugzilla is used to manage defects.

Educational Information

It should be in a table format, with the greatest degree appearing first until you have completed high school. The highest degree’s name University and Year of passing out.

Certifications

If there are any certifications, mention them in this section.

Work Experience

Include the details of all of your past employment.

  • Assist with the preparation of the test plan’s defect management, communication, and test scope sections.
  • Performing a feasibility study of the requirements and identifying test scenarios/test objectives.
  • End-to-end test cases, regression suites, and system test cases must all be identified.
  • Test cases were documented, and peer assessments of teammate’s work were undertaken.
  • Extensive functional testing of the Admin module is performed.
  • Browser compatibility testing on Google Chrome 80.0 and Mozilla Firefox 75.0 versions are performed
  • Participate in Scrum meetings on a daily basis.
  • In the admin panel, perform functional testing for exploratory testing.
  • In charge of the sanity and smoke tests.
  • Jira is used for tests and defect management.

5. Important Aspects to Consider When Creating a Resume

Some of the Important Dos and Don’ts are as follows:

  • Make sure your resume isn’t too long. For a beginner-level professional, 2–3 pages are ideal. Try not to go over 5 pages for experienced staff.
  • Passport numbers and other sensitive details should not be included.
  • You can still add project details if you are a beginner with no past work experience. These projects will be off-the-job and self-initiated. Choose gmail.com or amazon.com as an example and extensively test it using a testing approach that is similar to the real-time project. Make a note of your findings and integrate them as part of your experience.
  • If you’re coming from a non-IT background and want to include it, keep it to a bare minimum.
  • Today’s resumes are also evaluated by search engines. As a result, use as many keywords as possible, and repeat them.

However, be cautious when using them. I’ve seen a lot of resumes that list every possible ability. Your resume serves as your ticket to a job interview, not a job. When you can’t explain why you don’t have certain skills, you’ll find yourself in a difficult scenario.
